Tyson Fury’s coach Ben Davison has joined fighters and pundits in protecting Rob McCracken against criticism that he place Anthony Joshua’s life in danger during his defeat by Andy Ruiz Jr..
Brain injury charity Headway states it’s»shocking» that coach McCracken advised 5 Live Boxing that he»understood Joshua had been concussed» during his reduction to Ruiz in June.
51, mcCracken, has stated it was not the expression he meant to use.
«I really don’t think the men and women who have criticised Rob have any experience or knowledge of boxing,» Davison told BBC Sport.
«When a fighter goes I would envision that has some form of concussive impact every time.
«If Rob would be to get pulled up and blamed or criticised afterward I want criticising overly since Tyson got knocked against Deontay Wilder in round nine and 12 and that I let it continue. If he’s getting criticised I need it as well.»
The British Boxing Board of Control has supported McCracken.
Joshua was floored twice in round seven and twice in round three against Ruiz, that picked up both the WBO IBF and WBA world heavyweight titles.
Throughout the fight, Joshua requested McCracken involving rounds what around was next, and prior to the seventh, asked:»Why am I feeling like this?»
Headway says McCracken’s assertion that his charge fought concussed revealed the trainer’s»sole priority was on winning the struggle» instead of protecting Joshua out of»a possibly fatal harm».
The organization also stated concussion protocols in boxing»are not worth the paper they’re written on».
BBC Radio 5 Live boxing analyst Steve Bunce said:»This is an outrageous comment for any organisation to produce about boxing, particularly in Britain, in which the British Boxing Board of Control would be the major body when it has to do with fighter care.
«They are constantly reviewing fighters. That is an unnecessary remark. Since it’s much too powerful, I am somewhat outraged by this.
«What occurred here, McCracken simply picked the wrong word. He could have said Joshua was dazed, stunned, or so even the term we use in boxing. They all fall of concussion, a word. I genuinely believe he used the incorrect word.»
In July, Russian Maxim Dadashev and Argentine Hugo Alfredo Santillan became the 11th and 12th fighters to die as a result of injuries sustained in the ring over the past decade.
McCracken has let fighters continue after knockdowns before, with Joshua recovering to stop Carl Froch rallying to conquer George Groves in 2013 and Wladimir Klitschko at 2017.
Wondering how boxing would survive if fighters were removed from bouts if they are concussed, Dave Coldwell, who trained Tony Bellew and now works with the likes of Anthony Fowler and Jordan Gill, explained:»It’d be the conclusion of boxing.
«All combat sports, also it could be the end. This is the reason people choose to box and others don’t.
«Sometimes a fighter will come back and isn’t concussed and will inquire what we are in as he is that wrapped up into a fight.
«There are times where you think someone wants pulling out and then suddenly they head out within another round and so are fresh as a tug and pull it back»
Head trauma is a hotly debated topic in athletics, with soccer, the two codes of cricket and rugby encircle concussion protocols that are diverse.
Former European bantamweight champion Spencer Oliver told BBC World Service:»When I had my first European title defence I did not realise I was concussed but I should have been.
«The doctor came in and asked me simple questions. I couldn’t for the life of me work out which day it was. She stated if I got it wrong another time I would visit hospital. She asked me again and that I guessed and got it straight.»
Oliver, who was put in a coma after being injured in a fight in 1998, included:»I’ve known Joshua since afternoon, if he has hurt he takes a few rounds [to recover]. I know what Rob thought.
«He was clearly concussed, most of us saw that. But when I was in the identical situation I am not sure I would have pulled Joshua out.»
