Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp says past season’s Champions League triumph does not make them the best club in Europe.
The Reds’ 2-0 victory over Tottenham at June in Madrid gave Klopp his first trophy with the team.
They begin their title defence against Napoli within their Group E opener on Tuesday (20:00 BST), and Klopp says that his side cannot dwell on past achievement.
«There are a whole good deal of great teams out there and you have to prove that always,» said the German.
«We might not qualify as the best team in Europe since Manchester City are the best group on earth — that is the identical world, I discovered.
«Last season, we had been really good. I’m not too convinced we had been the best team in Europe, but we’re very good in the perfect moments and that’s the reason why we won the Champions League.»
Liverpool were also paired with Napoli with the Italian side winning 1-0 to the fixture this past year, in the group stage.
Klopp says that his side cannot afford to let their performance degree drop in any sport in this year’s competition, especially with teams inclined to get additional motivation against the reigning champions.
«Last yearwe learned from 1 game to another game and we have to use that experience, because if we don’t defend with all we have then we have no chance against Napoli. They’re so powerful,» he added.
«They’re stubborn in a positive manner. They play soccer, lines are broken by them they have counter-attacks that are great they are creative. When I revisit Napoli I like it. I like to watch them.»
By stressing the players have set last season’s Champions League victory to the back of their 26, his boss’s opinions were surrendered by captain Jordan Henderson.
«Last year was last season,» stated that the 29-year-old England midfielder.
«We can have experience from the effort and, if we could take that to this campaign, we feel we can still do a lot of things better and everything is possible »
Divock Origi, who scored the goal in the Champions League final against Spurs, did not travel with Liverpool to Naples. Teenager Rhian Brewster rather made the trip to Italy.
Left-back Andy Robertson picked up a knock in the weekend but is expected to be fit for this game.
Midfielder Naby Keita along with goalkeeper Alisson remain sidelined, even though the latter may return to training.
