Former Burton Albion defender Kelvin Maynard killed and was shot in Amsterdam, Dutch authorities have confirmed.
The 32-year-old was shot in his vehicle since they search for two suspects who they say escaped onto a scooter that was black and police are appealing for witnesses.
He died of his injuries although officers from a nearby fire station attempted to assist Maynard.
The Dutch-Surinamese player, who had a spell in Royal Antwerp, was in club Alphense Boys.
Maynard combined Burton in November 2014 following Dutchman Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink’s appointment as manager.
Injury restricted him before he had been ruled out after suffering a knee injury in a game, as the Brewers won the League Two name.
He abandoned Burton to combine Dutch facet Spakenburg.
