How Super League’s play-off and relegation battles stand heading into Round 29

We have a look at the way the relegation and play-off battles stand heading into the final round of Super League’s regular season.
There are three teams who have to play heading to Round 29: St Helens, Catalans Dragons, and Leeds Rhinos.
Saints have such an unassailable lead on top of the table they had wrapped up the League Leaders’ Shield for the second year in a row by the middle of August — though head coach Justin Holbrook will be keen to venture into the play-offs on the rear of a win.
Catalans’ collapse within the last 3 weeks has seen them slip out of play-off contention altogether, and they’re certain to finish seventh in the table — the exact same as last year, albeit better off in terms of their points total.
Leeds defeated a start to steer clear of the relegation battle in the closing months of the season, earning head coach Richard Agar the role as the successor on a permanent foundation of David Furner. The Rhinos are set to finish eighth.
Salford Red Devils, Warrington Wolves, and wigan Warriors are confident of places in the play-offs, even though that they will face and what their final setting will be depends upon the outcomes of the week’s fixtures.
That leaves Hull FC and Castleford Tigers fighting it out with both teams on 30 points, but the Tigers occupying the remaining place by virtue of some much superior points difference.
While the men of Lee Radford are about minus-107 daryl Powell’s side currently have a points difference of plus-106. Consequently, a win away to Wigan live on Sky Sports, could make sure of Castleford’s play-off location — the night, regardless of Hull do at home to St Helens.
The Black and Whites should thus hope they can become the third group when they are to sneak into the play-offs to overcome Saints from Super League this season and that Castleford drop into the Warriors.
Avoiding defeat against Castleford would be enough for Wigan irrespective of how Salford and Warrington reunite on to secure second place along with house advantage for their first game in the play-offs. But, defeat for Wigan could see them finish as low as fourth, as both Warrington and Salford can then overtake them.
If Wigan lose the anglers could take second and they win off to Leeds by virtue of some much superior points difference. Yet defeat to the Challenge Cup winners in Headingley will leave them in danger of completing below Salford — if Ian Watson’s men defeat Hull KR — and as low as fourth.
At the moment, the Red Devils — that could finish as high as fifth — so are just 13 supporting Warrington with regards to factors difference. A win over Rovers, plus defeat for Steve Price’s side, could visit Salford move above them.
If both teams win or lose — or perhaps draw, at case ten moments of golden-point extra-time fails to create a winner — they would be level on things and it might come down to choose where they finish.
The is points percentage, which can be calculated by dividing points scored by factors and multiplying that number if teams are level on points gap. If teams are still level, it goes to attempts scored, goals scored, drop goals scored and finally — the toss of a coin.
Given Salford have scored 134 attempts to Warrington’s 116 going in these games, it is highly unlikely to go any farther than that if the clubs be level on points gap points, and points percent after Round 29.
Virtue of finishing top of their Super League table already seeds through to Round Two of the play-offs st Helens. They’ll host the winners of this match between second and third.
The winner of that game at Totally Wicked Stadium goes to Old Trafford for the Grand Final. The loser gets another chance, but against the group which originates from the other half of the draw.
Round 1 sees two games occur: second versus third and fourth vs fifth. This former’s loser would play with the winner of this latter in round two, with the winner from that game moving on to play with the loser of this match at St Helens to the Grand place.
Not certain how it works? We’ve got a useful video describing the procedure below…
Super League has never known a relegation struggle together with four teams degree on 20 points dropping into the Championship for the 2020 season and fighting to avoid finishing bottom of the table.
London Broncos, Huddersfield Giants, Hull KR, along with wakefield Trinity are .
In a further twist, Wakefield and the Broncos face each other at Mobile Rocket Stadium at the final round of the regular season, live on Sky Sports on Friday, which means a win for either will assure them of a place in Super League for next year.
Trinity possess a points difference to the 3 groups but defeat to them and preventing defeat for Rovers and the Giants from Salford and Catalans respectively would see them finish base.
Victories to the men of Simon Woolford along with Tony Smith’s negative would find them stay up. Were they lose, it would come down to tie-breakers together with the failure of the game between London and Wakefield — that the Broncos being by far the worst off in terms of points gap.
When the Giants lose along with also the Broncos winHuddersfield would become reliant on Rovers losing at Salford to stay up. In the capital city side winning and the case of Rovers losing, the East Hull outfit would require the Giants to lose by a margin of 13 points larger than their reduction to the Red Devils to stay up.
In the unlikely scenario of a draw after ten minutes of at Wakefield, Huddersfield and Hull KR would face an anxious wait to see which tie-breakers encounter effect if they both lose.
It would be the exact same in the more improbable scenario that the Broncos and Wakefield attraction, and Huddersfield and Hull KR do in their games.
Whichever team ends up being relegated will go down with a record number of wins and things, emphasising how many of the sides in Super League are this season.
Whatever the result, because they aim to make sure their destiny remains in their hands it promises to be a nail-biting evening for many four clubs around Friday.
