Harry Winks admits it has been difficult to watch on as England reached the semi-finals of finals.
The Tottenham midfielder dropped out on the run prior to starring last year and getting fit.
More fitness issues followed and — despite beginning Tottenham’s Champions League defeat to Liverpool — England manager Gareth Southgate decided not to incorporate the squad in June.
But after starting the season back at the Spurs side, Winks was invited into the England squad for the upcoming Qualifiers from Kosovo and Bulgaria.
«Yes, I spoke to the gaffer the week prior to the [Champions League] closing,» he answered when asked whether he understood why he had been left out of this Nations League squad.
«He called me and gave me his own views. I admire the conclusion of the gaffer, I was out for a couple of weeks following a surgery and he had to mention the squad ahead of the Champions League [final].
«Therefore I completely understand his thinking. My thinking has been with Tottenham — to find fit, to get in that Champions League team.
«Then obviously later it would have been an honor to go out with England, but for different reasons I totally know why the gaffer did that. I admire his choice.
«It’s always difficult to watch any football you are a part of if you’re unfamiliar — notably the World Cup.
«First and foremost I was an England fan, I needed us to perform this nicely, but it is everyone’s dream to play to their countries, therefore to get missed that was challenging.
«And to miss from the Nations League was tough. But that is football. Decisions are made by Folks and it is part and parcel of moving on.
«We’ve got the Euros to look forward to, so hopefully I can stay healthy and play a part in this»
