West Ham director Manuel Pellegrini has urged people to respect Declan Rice’s decision to switch international allegiance from Republic of Ireland into England.
The Hammers midfielder has revealed his choice led to threats against him and his loved ones in some misuse that was online.
Before declaring his intention to change at the start of the year the 20-year-old represented the team at youth level and went on to make three appearances, but reluctantly not in competitive matches.
Rice has established himself Gareth Southgate’s plans and won a cap for England at the 5-3 triumph over Kosovo in St Mary’s Stadium on Tuesday within their Qualifier, with Pellegrini insisting it is now time to move on.
«I think Declan postponed his decision also had a feel and a conversation with all the people important for him I don’t have any doubt that it was the right decision Declan took for his life» Pellegrini said before West Ham’s match with Aston Villa — reside on Monday Night Football on Sky Sports.
«Obviously, not everybody is happy, but everybody must honor him for this and he should not give them too much importance because it doesn’t matter what other men and women think.»
Pellegrini reported no fresh injury concerns following the break and supported winger Michail Antonio has undergone operation on a problem he suffered through the Carabao Cup win at Newport.
«I expect that the surgery went well. The physicians are happy and he wants time to recover,» Pellegrini added.
«I only talked with him and he is without any hassle, so that everything is going in the appropriate way.»
