Darren Eadie interview: Depression saw me turn my back on football

«I turned my back to football for many years,» says Darren Eadiesaid «It was not because I didn’t like the match. This was simply because I loved it and I could not do it anymore. Envision your fire — anything you wake up for — and then being told overnight you can not do it anymore. Then being told it’s OK because it is still possible to see your mates get it done. It is so difficult.»
Retirement comes to each footballer than he could ever have imagined, but the ending for Eadie came.
He had been a winger. When he became an inaugural member of this club’s hall of fame he was still playing. However, his move to Leicester has been blindsided by knee injuries. At only 28, his career was finished.
«It was more the shock than anything else,» he informs Sky Sports. «I had had accidents to my knee before and always come back from it I always believed I would return in the subsequent one. So to awaken from a surgery and also have my wife walked there along with the physio sat there as well as also the surgeon sat there telling me how my livelihood was done at 28 had been a enormous shock.»
Looks had been made by eadie with 81 of those. He’d been tipped for stardom as a child but though his injuries had ensured those heights weren’t likely to be attained, he was expecting a very long career before him. Retirement wasn’t the program.
The strategy had to change.
«It is like being thrown out of a fish tank and unexpectedly you are flailing around on the ground not knowing what to do. It is a different atmosphere. This was the issue for me. It was. It had been that I was really learning how to fit into society because it is very different to being at a football changing room.
«You have this sort of resilience to you as a footballer. In case you have a game that is poor you tell yourself that there is another game just around the corner and you will have the chance to put it. That’s how I attempted to handle this. I just went to place it behind me and try to enjoy my retirement. But this quickly fades.
«It requires different life skills and you need to know that pretty quickly. I think placing it was probably. I should have spoken to folks straight away. However, I tried to put a brave face and bottled up everything, put away it, covered it up. After a while, that takes its toll»
Eadie suffered from melancholy.
There were still tears. Panic attacks. He could not leave the home. Other times he needed to call his wife.
«It was a gradual process,» he clarifies. «In football, you will need a bit of stress to play. Nervous stress is needed by you. However, that was too much. I made excuses to not see people. I had been making excuses to not go out. That is when you realise you’re getting deeper and deeper.
«There has been a point once I hit rock bottom and also my wife was fantastic at that moment. She had been having to manage a child . I had been a person who was needy. You wind up hanging on their every word. All it would take is just one’wrong’ word and I would be down at the depths again so that I think there should be more support for the families too.»
Could football do much to help?
«The difficulty when you finish early is that you’re a commodity. As much as you might be valued by them once you’re done when you’re playing for them you are finished. You can not help them. I can understand that. It is a organization. But when you’re dealing with human beings there is a bit more to it than this. You can’t treat people.
«Times have changed. The understanding is so far superior than it was. The way football sees it, even if you are not mentally strong then a supervisor will discard you since you are not mentally right. They will say his head is not right to play without considering the reasons for this and how they can help.
«I really do think the PFA needs to do more. Here is the largest game on the planet but I believe in addressing these issues, baseball and cricket are. A lot of time in football it is just lip service. People say what other men and women want to listen and don’t return to it»
Life stays tough for Eadie. He lost his mom to a sudden brain haemorrhage. But the positive for him is that he is discovering a way to cope with what life throws at him. He is in a better place. «There are always things to handle in life but general daily life doesn’t look so bad anymore,» he says.
«You learn when you are going through a bad period. The thing is that if you have been through the event before you realize there’s an end to it. The issue is whenever you’re going the first time, you’re moving down and down, and you believe there is no end to it. That is when, regrettably, people take their own lives.
«If you have an episode and get it through, that’s when you discover that they become shorter, you can deal and you also develop methods to take care of this. I would urge anyone who endures those things and has those kind of ideas to see someone. The longer you jar it up, the longer you wait patiently to find a physician, the worse it is going to be.»
Eadie is enjoying his role running a football programme for an independent college — in Ipswich of all places — and is involved in another venture that is exciting too. He helped launch a fresh YouTube series FC Kitchen appearing at soccer and food in a way, aiming to increase awareness of the benefits of ingesting a wholesome diet.
«For those who have kids yourself you are inclined to check out the bigger picture and attempt to be more responsible,» he states. «So it’s a tie-in concerning veganism and consuming less meat. I will always eat meat but it is about providing a different and studying how we could slow down our impact on Earth. We are pitching vegans against meat eaters.»
Eadie is having fun. Pleasingly, his involvement in football is no longer limited to his work at school. He’s currently watching football after turning his back on the match. There is some work for Norwich TV.
«It is normal to drift back to someplace you had nice times,» he adds. «I am finding it enjoyable watching football again »
